Does anyone know this guy? His project sounds interesting, but I'm always
cautious!

Subject: RE: Award for Research project at Metropolitan Museum of Art on
Blindness & Access

I recently had a research project accepted by the Metropolitan Museum, New
York, which is scheduled to begin in 2010. The aims of this research are to
investigate whether two dimensional art works are accessible to people who
are blind or visually impaired and, using this information, how best to make
all two dimensional pieces available for blind and visually impaired people
through websites, including my own, ECO: On Blindness and the Arts - if you
didn't know this is at http://www.blindnessandarts.com.

In a bid to raise funds for this research project I have applied for two
awards, one mainstream academic and another which is a little more
"showbiz", which offers a free flight to New York, and is run by British
Airways and the London 2012 Olympics. This latter award / competition is
called Great Britons, and has been won in the past by internationally ranked
athletes and famous "showbizzey" type people - Lenny Henry, anyone - to
attend athletics meetings and international comedy events. Therefore it was
much to my surprise that I was told that my work had reached the shortlist
of the final eight in the country of "Great Britons" - based mostly on the
strength of the success of ECO, and the books, papers and lectures I have
produced.

Now that I have reached the final eight, my application is being thrown open
to the public to vote for their favourite, and so now I need people to vote
for me through my web space on the Great Britons website. The address for my
section is: http://www.greatbritons.ba.com/shortlists?user_id=2805 and all
you need to do after reaching this shortlist is to click my tab, to reach my
personal section. After this, please click the “vote for me” tab, create a
short account – to ensure I am not just sitting at home pressing the “vote”
button over and over again – and give me your vote! Could you also please
add a comment about how such research may help disabled communities or, if
you know me personally, something about my work in the comments section,
which can be seen by other people. This would be a great help. In addition,
if you are part of a big organisation / school / department or college,
could you also please encourage others to vote for me on this website.

Thank you for your help with all of this, and I promise to keep you all
posted of the outcome – whether good or bad!

As ever, best wishes and cheers,

Simon
