As a former member of the awards committee , if I remember correctly, this
portion of the questions was addressed. Points were given. But it depended
exactly what kind of volunteering was done.

Subject: [Ohio-talk] gavel Award Question 2
I will jump into this discussion because I helped to construct these
questions originally. Of course I don't know how the awards committee scored
the Cincinnati answer, but in the beginning our intention was not to count
community activities that in themselves have nothing to do with blindness.
If we are going to count the general volunteer activities of the chapter
members, we should all know this and write answers accordingly. Originally
we told people that chapter members who volunteered in a food pantry for the
poor, for example, were doing good work but were not directly advancing the
NFB's work. We went on to say that if chapter members volunteered in the
election campaign of a public servant who had been helpful in backing our
legislation, that could count. You can see that all this is very complex. I
don't know that it matters how we score volunteer work, but everyone should
know what the general criteria are.
