Helpful Hint
As a sponsor, you understand the need to pursue all available avenues in marketing NFB-NEWSLINE®. One easy way to promote the service and gain new subscribers is through your agency or organizational application forms and information packets. You can add a question to the application form that asks if the applicant wishes to sign up for NFB-NEWSLINE®; you would then follow up with the individual to complete the NFB-NEWSLINE® application form and submit it accordingly. If you have information packets that you distribute, please insert the NFB-NEWSLINE® brochure and application forms along with your agency or organizational material. By taking these steps, you are helping to connect the print-disabled to this beneficial service and providing them with a resource that is likely to mirror your goal of helping blind people to attain greater access and achieve increased independence.

Dear J.W.,
Sponsors, due to a variety of factors we were unable to send this newsletter on time, please accept our apologies for its late delivery.
We're still looking for suggestions from our sponsors as to how this newsletter may best benefit you in your efforts to promote NFB-NEWSLINE®; if you'd like to offer any ideas, please write to rwest at nfb.org. Thank you!
Main Menu
A warm hello to all of our sponsors! I want to let you know that the new features and compatibilities we spoke of last month are now in effect! Subscribers can now access the new voices (Paul and Kate), in addition to the Eloquence voice. Also, when listening to the service on the phone, subscribers can request an article to be sent to their e-mail on demand, and also can download their favorite publications to their BookSense with NFB-NEWSLINE® In Your Pocket.
Does your agency or organization have a Twitter account? If so, I have a favor to request: please follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/NFB_NEWSLINE) and re-tweet important announcements, such as when we add a new publication or service enhancement. In this manner, we could help inform subscribers in your community who don't follow us about additions or improvements to our service. We would also shower you with copious applause if you would occasionally "tweet" about NFB-NEWSLINE® to remind people about this great service, and/or how NFB-NEWSLINE® has benefited you or someone you know. As with any service you provide, it's important to keep those you serve "in the know" about the value of NFB-NEWSLINE®.
Channel Chat
Your State Information Channel can contain a diversity of information that your subscribers might find really useful, so it's worth the time to think of new and different types of content that your channel could provide. One terrific example of truly different and beneficial content is the availability of the Hadley School for the Blind course catalog available on the Illinois Information Channel thanks to the efforts of the creative and hardworking David Meyer. Subscribers are able to easily determine what courses are available, and Hadley is likely to gain some new students as a result.
Using this content idea as a springboard, you can surely think of ways that your channel can offer similarly valuable information. For example, your channel could provide information from educational institutions from around your state, such as course listings from universities or adult continuing education classes, or information from your local Cooperative Extension Offices (find entities in your state by visiting http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/). Also, Disabled Student Services offices in colleges and vocational schools from around your state likely have brochures and/or newsletters that may be of assistance to print-disabled students in your state. Give it some thought and you're sure to come up with a few ideas that would truly benefit those you serve, and would likely create beneficial networks for your agency in the process.

Subscriber's Corner
I recently spoke with Dr. Laina King, who serves as the Director of Diversity in Life Science Programs with Keystone Symposia, an organization that organizes international conferences to bench researchers studying cancer and other issues dealing with cellular-level concerns. She has had quite a varied career, including serving as a psychologist and university professor, and due to the science classes taught by a Harvard-educated teacher in high school she has developed an interest in science, leading her to take her current position. Not only has her professional path been varied, but also varied are her personal interests, which certainly made for a very interesting and wide-ranging discussion!
In both her career and in her personal life, Dr. King finds NFB-NEWSLINE® to be of great value. She told me "Without NFB-NEWSLINE® I really would not have access to the news that I need to keep up with news that directly influence my work." One example of such benefit was when she was planning a symposium in England, she had to keep abreast of possible European travel restrictions imposed as a result of the H1N1 virus. She told me that she also appreciates having access to the service when she's travelling, so that she can learn about the area she's visiting before she travels, and stay on top of both news in her field and news from home when away. She said that she also finds that NFB-NEWSLINE® fits in nicely with her work, saying "The neatest thing about NFB-NEWSLINE® is that it really lets me keep up comfortably, I can sit in my office and have it going while I'm doing something else, it's a very functional tool in that way."
More personally, she finds access to newspapers and magazines, such as the Denver Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Toronto Globe and Mail aids her by keeping her informed of state, national, and international news. She believes it is important for everybody to be informed; beneficial for individuals as well as the print-disabled community at large. She explained her feelings by saying "I don't want a whole segment of society unable to access that information critical for a full life and a full understanding and appreciation of our culture, our world," and believes that educated and informed individuals are integral to the creation of a good society. I appreciate her perspective, and I appreciate her time helping our sponsors to realize the good that NFB-NEWSLINE® brings to subscribers in all the roles they play. Thank you, Laina!
