Subject: Youth Slam Coordinator

JW,

As we get ready for the 2011 NFB Youth Slam, I am looking for a youth slam
contact person for each state. In the past, this person has usually also
been the one whom affiliates have designated as their youth outreach person
or youth coordinator, which has worked out well because this person usually
has an interest in reaching out to, or interacts more often with high
school-age youth in your state. However, the Youth Slam Coordinator and
your state's youth coordinator do not necessarily have to be the same
person.

As a Youth Slam Coordinator, We are looking for someone basically to be the
point person on all things Youth Slam for your state affiliate. The
responsibilities of the youth slam coordinator are:

a.. Promote the program and recruit high school students in your
affiliate.
b.. Distribute flyers and other promotional materials about the 2011 Youth
Slam.
c.. Visit schools in an effort to recruit blind teens to youth slam.
d.. make phone calls to youth in your area to invite them to apply for
the Youth Slam
e.. provide assistance to parents and youth in completing the online
application if they need it.
f.. Work with state agencies for the blind as a resource for recruiting
teens to the Youth slam
Once we have identified youth slam coordinators for each state, we will hold
a couple of phone conferences with these individuals to help explain their
roles, and provide them with important information about the program so they
will be better equipped to answer questions about it. . These
responsibilities will officially begin on November 1 and continue into the
summer of 2011. The Youth Slam coordinator does not need to be available to
participate in the Youth Slam next summer, however, they are certainly
welcome to apply to be a volunteer for the event and can do so by completing
a volunteer application online at www.blindscience.org after Nov. 1.

As per previous discussions with you, I know that the youth coordinator for
Ohio is Deborah. I can't remember. Do you want her to be the point person
for the 2011 Youth Slam? She did it in 2009, and it seemed to work out
pretty well. Please confirm by email at teolivero at nfb.org or call me at
(410) 659-9314 ext. 2295.

Thank you for your help and support of this exciting event.

Warmest Regards,

Treva
