Ohio Business Leadership Network
Building on last week's successful Ohio Business Leadership Network (OBLN) kick-off, I had a follow-up meeting with OBLN members to discuss how we can continue the momentum. We discussed the ways in which RSC can serve as a bridge between employers and Ohioans with disabilities. Developing these bridges and partnerships can be a win-win scenario for Ohio as our consumers get the dignity and independence of work while job-creators get a worker with specialized skills that truly value their job.
Legislative Advocacy Day
One of the speakers at Legislative Advocacy Day was Robert Milliken of Ohio SIDS.
The Legislative Advocacy Day at the Statehouse allowed me to join with members of the Ohio General Assembly and other state agencies to hear from over 300 RSC consumers, self-advocates and family members about issues that are impacting their lives. The theme of the event was "Moving Forward: The Horizon for the Disability Community."
Meetings with MH and BWC Directors
I also met with Ohio Department of Mental Health (MH) Director Tracy Plouck and Bureau of Workers' Compensation Administrator Steve Buehrer this week. One of the ways we are working to improve the services we provide to people with disabilities is making sure we coordinate with other state agencies so we aren't duplicating efforts to provide services. In this time of diminishing state revenue, it is imperative that we understand the programs other agencies offer so we can coordinate, and in some cases become partners, to stretch each state dollar even further.
Ohio Board of Regents
I had a very productive meeting with Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro to discuss ways we can strengthen our current partnership which allows RSC to draw approximately $2.6 million in federal funds to assist eligible college students in succeeding in classrooms.
Ohio State School for the Blind
On Wednesday, I met with members of the Ohio State School for the Blind. I am committed to having a presence at this school to ensure that as kids graduate and transition to college or the workplace, they will be aware of the services we offer to support them in their endeavors.
Operation Feed
The face of hunger is changing in Ohio. In any given week, more than 40,000 people receive emergency food assistance in the central Ohio area alone-they may be our neighbors, co-workers, friends, or the people we serve. Only 5% of food bank clients are homeless; many have to make the choice between food and utilities, rent, or medication each month. Join us in participating in Operation Feed (April 18 - June 18)-because no one should go hungry. www.midiohiofoodbankorg.
Autism Rally
Jerod Smalley of WCMH-TV interviews Director Miller at the Autism Rally at the Statehouse.
RSC was proud to join other state agencies and advocacy groups like the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities and the Autism Society of Ohio at the 7th Annual Autism Rally at the Statehouse. Having a son who is autistic, it was inspiring to see people come together and hear about what kinds of services and supports people with autism need so that they have the tools to succeed in life.
