Youth Leadership Forum

This week we are going to spotlight the Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) that
was held in Columbus. YLF is a week-long conference that provides selected
high school juniors and seniors with disabilities the opportunity to develop
and enhance leadership skills. YLF featured seminars on voting, preparing
for job interviews and incorporated social activities such as a talent show
and a dance. I want to congratulate the Governor's Council on People with
Disabilities (GCPD) for the largest participant turnout in its 11 year
history.

I had the honor of speaking to the delegates at the YLF kick-off on Monday.
It was an experience like none other-to see future advocates and leaders
gathered in one room to plot out the best ways to use their unique talents
to improve their communities was inspiring. It was also a great opportunity
to speak with the delegates about RSC's efforts to connect with them through
our transition youth programs. I also shared with them some of the exciting
things I've had the privilege to see since becoming director-things like
Project SEARCH in Columbus and Cincinnati that are helping empower young
adults with successful employment that leads to a more independent living
experience.

On Thursday, Tyson Gentry provided the keynote address to this year's YLF.
Mr. Gentry was a punter for The Ohio State University football team in 2006
when he suffered a spinal cord injury during practice, leaving him
paralyzed. He described his fight each day to regain the use of his limbs
and refusal to give into the naysayers who say the odds are not in his favor
to walk again. What was particularly uplifting about his talk was how he has
turned his injury into a force for good in his community. Mr. Gentry
regularly speaks up and out about the need for people with disabilities to
be assured access and inclusion to employment and other essential life
opportunities. In some ways his message to the young people gathered at YLF
was simple: We all have disabilities but the most important thing is to
never allow a disability to get in the way of the things you believe in.

I want to thank Jermaine Brown, Chair, GCPD and Scott Hinton, Deputy
Director, GCPD, as well as staff members Donna Foster and Pamela Carter for
their dedicated work in making another inspiring and exciting YLF for each
of this year's delegates.
We got excellent news from the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA)
this afternoon on the enormously important issue of RSC contracts with local
public agencies who include money from third-party partners to qualify for
our matching dollars.

The RSA has informed us that local public agencies who contract with RSC can
use private funds obtained by community rehabilitation programs as part of
their funding match.
