Political, Policy Groups Have Similar Names, Disparate Purposes

Politicians, business interests, labor unions and others have built up an
array of campaigns, coalitions and PACs since the start of the year amid the
furor of budget season, the battle over SB5 and as a precursor to the
2012 campaigns. The entities represent various groups and interests -- some
overlapping, some disparate. But they share one theme: ambiguous, feel-good
titles that give little indication of their purpose.

The recently established groups include the following:

- One Ohio Now. Launched in January, this coalition of education, labor,
human service and other groups calls for increased tax revenue should figure
into the state's plan to bridge a multi-billion dollar deficit, saying core
services will wither too much under a cuts-only budget. It is not to be
confused with My Ohio Now, which was behind the failed campaign to build a
casino in Clinton County.

- One Ohio United. This coalition includes various business leaders and
advocates for passage of Gov. John Kasich's budget proposals.

- Ohio's Campaign for Jobs. This coalition, led by the Ohio Chamber of
Commerce, local chambers and other businesses, also advocates for passage of
provisions in Kasich's budget proposal.

- We Are Ohio. This group is the official campaign committee behind efforts
to seek repeal on the November ballot of collective bargaining changes in
SB5 (Jones).

- Building a Better Ohio. This group was formed to encourage voters to
uphold SB5 on the ballot, and will involve advocacy by Kasich, Senate
President Tom Niehaus (R-New Richmond) and House Speaker Bill Batchelder
(R-Medina.)

- Advocates for Ohio's Future. This coalition of human services groups was
organized to press for the preservation of safety-net services. It is a
re-named version of a former human-service advocacy group called the
Campaign to Protect Ohio's Future.

- Protect Ohio Families. This group of organized labor supporters opposes
SB5 and various provisions of Kasich's budget proposal.

- Protect Ohio's Future. This group says it wants to "generate solutions and
support policies that will help Ohio address its challenges head one, while
finding ways to seize coming opportunities." Its chairman is last year's
candidate for state auditor, David Pepper, and the executive director is
Melissa Barnhart, longtime aide to former Attorney General Richard Cordray.

- Join the Future Ohio. This group advocates for public education and
opposes SB5 and several education-related provisions in Kasich's budget
proposal.
