Statewide CAC Meeting
On Saturday, we were able to bring in many of our statewide Consumer
Advisory Council (CAC) members for important discussions about how RSC can
best utilize their talents in serving people with disabilities. Our CAC
members offer RSC unique skills and abilities so we want their feedback on
their experiences thus far and how we can leverage these assets going
forward. I want to thank all of the CAC members for taking time out of their
weekend for this essential discussion. The Ohio House budget caps RSC
program services costs in third party contracts at 13%, a deep cut to the
Kasich Administration proposal for RSC. I am working to restore Project
S.O.L.V.E., State Outreach for Local Vocational Equality, calling for up to
25% program services costs to RSC on third party contracts, in the Ohio
Senate budget.
Budget Testimony
On Tuesday, I testified before the Ohio Senate Finance Committee at the Ohio
Statehouse. I strongly advocated that the RSC program services costs be
reinstated to the original request of up to 25% in an effort to retain all
counselors.
Transitional Programs
We had a meeting with Developmental Disabilities representatives and school
districts to discuss the ways in which RSC can partner with schools and
advocates in transitional programs. To better ensure that we don't let those
in need of RSC's services fall through the cracks, we want to ensure that as
students with disabilities graduate high school, they are aware of the
partnerships and programs that RSC offers to transitional youth.
Project SEARCH
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of touring Project SEARCH at Dublin
Methodist Hospital. Project SEARCH is a one-year, high school transition
program which provides training and education leading to employment for
individuals with disabilities. This week, I met with Dublin school officials
to express my support for this program and the importance of programs like
Project SEARCH for people with disabilities. We discussed how this program
can give real-world skills that directly lead to sustaining careers for
these students.
Recovery to Work Program
This week also brought important milestones in our recently launched

program. I was able to welcome a new group of Ohio Department of Alcohol and
Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) training participants who are dedicated to
this program's success and had the opportunity to present certificates to
staff members who completed their ODADAS training. Later on in the week, we
convened a conference call with stakeholders to discuss the Recovery to Work
program and how we all can continue working together to assist individuals
who are becoming addiction-free and are seeking training for a new career.
Continuing with the same theme, ODADAS Director Hall and I met over a brown
bag lunch to discuss ways we can partner to make the Recovery to Work
program penetrate even further into communities across the state. We
discussed the potential of partnerships with drug courts, re-entry and
criminal diversion programs. We worked very hard to bring these funds to
Ohio and Director Hall and I are even more dedicated to ensuring that these
funds have the greatest impact on as many lives as possible.
Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders

BSVI Deputy Director Dan Connors (left) and Director Miller met with Cara
Ingles (center) and Melissa Lawrence (right) at the Center for Autism
Spectrum Disorders.
I toured the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Nationwide Children's
Hospital in Columbus on Thursday. As a parent of a child with autism, I'm
aware of the unique challenges presented by this developmental disorder.
Jacqueline Wynn, PhD is the Program Director and demonstrated how
structured, comprehensive interventions can significantly improve a child's
quality of life.
Cafe Conversation
I finished up this week by traveling to Wright State University in Fairborn
for another Café Conversation. Few things are as important as getting
feedback from RSC consumers and partners about key issues to Ohioans with
disabilities and this conversation was very successful in getting input from
folks across this spectrum. We are carefully cataloguing people's ideas and
opinions as we explore ways to improve our agency.
