Esteemed Federationists:

There are a few items for our education programs with which I need your
help.

First, the judging for the Braille Readers Are Leaders contest is underway
and we will begin boxing up prizes in the coming weeks. If your state plans
to do a special event where you will hand out prizes for participants from
your state please contact Abby Bispo with the details at 410-659-9314
extension 2312 or abispo at nfb.org<mailto:abispo at nfb.org>. It is essential
that we know about your event if you are giving away prizes, otherwise we
will follow the contestants instructions and send their prize to their home.

Second, in the past when we have held large programs like the NFB Youth Slam
we have always had trouble finding enough experienced mentors to staff the
program. We tend to be about 10% shy of the number we would like to have
because some of the experienced mentors have scheduling conflicts and the
like. For the next NFB Youth Slam or other education program that requires
more than 25 volunteers we would like to have an overabundance of
experienced mentors available. In order to make that happen we need to grow
some of our younger and/or inexperienced Federationists so they are
qualified when this type of program comes around again. One of the ways we
are trying to grow mentors is to have some of our less experienced folks
work our smaller education programs. This summer we will host a new program
NFB Project
Innovation<http://www.blindscience.org/ncbys/Project_Innovation.asp?SnID=159
3113378> which is taking the place of the Junior Science Academy. We will
need a hand full of mentors for this program and this is where we need your
help. If there are young or inexperienced federationists in your affiliate
who are interested in mentoring please send their names, contact
information, and a blurb about them to me. Additionally if you have other
ideas about how we can grow mentors in the Federation please send your ideas
my way.

Finally, I will be out of the office frequently over the next several
months. Your questions, concerns, and ideas are of the utmost importance to
me. If you wish to get a hold of me please send me an email at
nshaheen at nfb.org<mailto:nshaheen at nfb.org> or call my cell phone
614-327-5100. I will be extremely difficult to get by phone in the office so
I ask that you use one of these other means of contacting me instead. If you
still have difficulty tracking me down I ask that you contact my colleague
Emily Gibbs at 410-659-9314 extension 2407 or
egibbs at nfb.org<mailto:egibbs at nfb.org>.

As always if you have ideas about work we should be doing in the education
realm or ideas about how we can make our existing programs better, please
get a hold of me and let's talk about your ideas!

Yours in the Federation,
Natalie Shaheen
