Hi Everyone,
I'm the one that had to cancel my surgery. It was supposed to be scheduled for Wednesday, November 7th for a hernia repair. Due to the bug going around, i came down with fever, a sore throat, congestion, sneezing, coughing and an all-arond uncomfortable feeling. It all started Monday night. The fever kept me up all night, and finally, I was able to sleep Tuesday morning once the fever broke.. I called the doctor on Tuesday to see whether I could go ahead with the surgery, but the nurse on call said to wait until I felt better. Complications could arise from the stitches being torn if I have coughing fits.
So, here I am, in the same boat as many of us--still recovering. I suspect it will take about two weeks before I can reschedule and the surgery probably won't happen until after Thanksgiving.
By the way, I voted against the BANA Braille changes at this year's convention. I like Braille the way it is. As the old saying goes, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."
I love all of my contractions and to have nine of them gone, feels like I've lost an old friend. BANA hasn't made Braille better; it just complicated it. Why is there a need for standardized Braille? How many people are likely to pick up a British, Australian, New Zealand, or Canadian book? Even if they do, their Braill is understandable as it is written.
I am very upset at NAPUB for its urgings of these changes, and I have not renewed my membership.
I will be a Braille maverick. As my way of a silent protest, I will continue to write Braille the way I have always learned it, no matter what happens.
I guess I'm also an old dog, but a nice one at that.
Milena
