Study: Many People Getting Disability Checks Say They Could Work

According to a Social Security Administration study of disability recipients, many people receiving federal disability checks admit they are able to work, but cannot or will not find a job.

The study was conducted in 2009, but the conservative Washington Examiner<http://washingtonexaminer.com/exography-many-disability-recipients-admit-they-could-work/article/2533626> recently analyzed the results.

The Washington Examiner reports that most recipients have never received much medical treatment or seen a doctor about their condition within a year.

However, that may be because the folks on disability cannot afford to see a doctor.

The Washington Examiner also reports that many people admit they're on disability because they can't find a job and don't try hard to find employment.

If so, this would contradict Social Security requirements for federal disability, which require the recipient to not be able to work.

The survey was compiled from responses of 2,300 disability benefits recipients.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays people who have not paid into the Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). In the U.S., there are about 11 million SSDI recipients and approximately seven million SSI recipients.

According to the Washington Examiner, those people collecting SSI are in less pain than people receiving SSDI.
