This actually sounds interesting! I tried out a device about ten years ago where you felt tactile impulses on your forhead and this provided information about the world around you, including "seeing" trees, buildings, doorways and sidewalk perimeters. It actually worked, though the info you received about the environment wasn't enough to make it worth wearing the device which I think was incorporated into a hat. 

Also, it seemed to have some unwanted effects on your brain/nervous system, causeing blind people to "see" flashes of light and/or tingling sensations in your neck and back  for some time after stopping use of the device. 

The auditory gadget sound safer, assuming the audio would not be directed right into your ears and brain. Could be fun to try out at the very least.
