Buckeye Update, February 21, 2013
It has been some time now since I last sat down to write an update. It has
certainly not been my plan to let so much time pass between updates.
On January 18 we held a very productive meeting of the board of
directors by conference call. Shortly after opening the meeting, we paid
tribute to our friend and colleague Bruce Peters. Shelbi will have minutes
out soon, which will include some of the comments about Bruce.
Six of us participated in this year's Washington Seminar. We divided
into three teams. Jen Kennedy, who now lives in Virginia, and her mother
came to a couple of our Ohio appointments. Jen's mother lives in Bob Gibbs's
district, and she is a former supervisor at goodwill. She was shocked to
learn how Goodwill treats its disabled employees. She is doing what she can
to help us get HR 831 passed in the House of Representatives. We must work
to get representatives from Ohio on this Bill. Tom Anderson tells me that
his member of Congress, Tim Ryan, will sign on as soon as Congress is back
in session.
We must also find cosponsors for the TEACH Act, HR 3505, and the Air
Carriers Access Amendments Act, S556. You will be hearing more about all of
this legislation in the weeks ahead.
Before leaving for Baltimore, I contracted some kind of upper
respiratory infection. It will come as no surprise to those of you who know
me that I usually put off going to the doctor for as long as I can.
Nevertheless, I went and got an antibiotic on Tuesday before leaving. I was
told that I would feel better before flying on Saturday, and indeed I did.
But On Sunday and Monday I started feeling worse. I knew that in spite of
the fact that I was out of town and that I did not have my insurance card
with me, I had to get another antibiotic. I did so, but this thing has
hung on for a long time. I am happy to say it is gone now.
My son John went in to the Marines on February 2. I had signed
papers for him to join in December of 2012. So we had more than a year to
prepare. His leaving was harder on me than it was for him. This is typical
for most children and parents I'm sure. After all, he is young and ready to
get started with the rest of his life.
William Turner has been quite sick since coming back from
Washington. I don't have a lot of information, but I ask that you keep him
in your thoughts and prayers.
Susan Day fell on the ice and broke her hip while taking out trash.
She had surgery last Tuesday and began physical therapy on Wednesday. Please
keep her in your thoughts and prayers as well.
Our next Scrip order will be released on March 3 at 7:00 PM. We must find
ways to get more people participating in this program. We have tried a
couple of contests to get people to participate. I am going to announce this
year's contest now. Any chapter or division that gets five new people to
sign up for Scrip and use Presto Pay to make two purchases between now and
September 1 will get convention registration waived for every member of the
chapter or division. So let me be clear about this: Five people who are
members of your chapter or division must sign up for the Scrip Program
between now and September. Those same five people must also make two
purchases using Presto Pay between now and the day we release the September
order. If you or someone comes to me and says I have a first timer or
someone else who wants to come to the convention, could you waive the
registration fee, the answer will be no unless the chapter or division has
met this Scrip challenge, in which case I will be able to say registration
is waived for your entire chapter or division.
During our Christmas sales campaign with Malley's Chocolate we made
$485.97 for the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio. We sold $1,472.65
worth of candy. Can we make a thousand dollars this time? I think we can. In
fact I know we can if we decide to do it. Even if you decide you don't want
to eat chocolate for some reason, buy some and send it to me. I will be
forever grateful. At this point we have had two people place orders. They
are Colleen Roth and Melina Zavoli. I am sure that neither of them are
sending chocolate to me.
I will write again next week. Here is the Malley's ordering information.
The National Federation of the Blind of Ohio is conducting a fundraising
