[Ohio-talk] Bus for State Convention

All,

As I was getting at in my post, and Deborah stated in her's, I think
timing is the problem more than the method of transportation and costs
associated with it.

Last year's convention was the first year that we moved to having the
board meeting on Thursday night, and the affiliate allowed for those
who wanted to listen from home to call in. If I'm not mistaken, I
believe Richard facilitated that through his cell phone so we could
all hear.

There were things going on Friday morning, but they were pannel
discussions and workshop type things which people didn't have to
attend if it was more practical to come to Columbus later in the day.
General session still started at 2:00, I believe. I may be slightly
off as I don't have an agenda from last year in front of me, but I
know there were quite a few people who came for the first general
session who weren't in the morning presentations.

I know the students are in the boat where we want to come to
convention and participate in it, but we also have to juggle academic
obligations with classes and possible tests/exams. I would imagine
some folks are in the same boat with their jobs. I think that the bus
and the camaraderie is probably appreciated by the membership, but the
timing of the departure isn't ideal for at least some. If you're not
planning to attend the board meeting or whatever preceeds the general
sessions in-person it is adventageous to miss as little work as
possible and come to Cleveland on Friday morning/afternoon instead of
missing two full days of work/school/whatever, plus pay for an extra
night in the hotel you weren't originally planning to pay for.

I certainly cannot speak for anyone in particular or the group, and
that is not my intent; that is just how I see the problem and why
people have been hesitant to jump on-board.

Now, this has given rise to new questions per my part. Is there a
possibility of paying for 1-way trips? For example, if I choose not
to miss all my Thursday and Friday classes and come to Independence
via Greyhound on Friday afternoon, could I pay for a trip back to
Dayton on the bus when it leaves on Sunday? What about seeing if
someone in or affiliated with the Cleveland chapter might be willing
to drive people from the Greyhound Station to the hotel with payment
for their time/gas costs from those members? I know Cincinnati's
chapter has worked to facilitate that kind of help between folks and
sighted drivers affiliated with the chapter in the past.

Looking at the Greyhound web site I don't see that the station in
Cleveland is closed on Sundays. Has this been varified as an
exception to their normal hours (Mon-Sun 12:00 AM-11:59 PM)?
