I am sending this document out because I have concerns about it.
ACVREP is developing a certification for assistive technology
specialists. OOD requires all O&M instructors, rehabilitation
teachers and other professionals to have ACVREP certification to work
with people who are blind and visually impaired. This has caused a
critical shortage of people to provide these services in Ohio. In
response to the shortage of Rehabilitation Teachers they are
considering allowing Occupational Therapists to do this job. If
they follow through with the plan to allow only certified assistive
technology specialists to provide training on assistive technology
will this have the same result. There are also many of us who are
blind whose training has come through alternate routes who may not
qualify to be certified. I hope NFB Ohio will look at this document
and also consider working with OOD to change their policy on who can
provide services. Also, feel free to make comments about this
document. I will also forward the email address where you can respond
to this recommendation.
