Having met Daniel several years ago, and having received some of this training discussed, I was excited to hear this podcast. I was also excited that instead of being portrayed as the Batman that can use echolocation to get around the world, he was portrayed as a do-gooder for blind people. It's kind of funny to hear about, but when you look at the psychology behind his methodology it's so true. Even if you don't use echolocation to the fullest extent that he teaches, it does teach you a different perspective of the world and helps you become so much more aware of your surroundings, like things you wouldn't even think were important to use for navigation. He was in charge of the camp I served as a counselor for last year, and it was a blast. Watching blind people get around his never been so interesting or so cool, not to mention very effective.
It also interest me that orientation and mobility specialist fight this methodology, even though Daniel is certified himself. I remember trying to use both methods at once when I was in high school, and my orientation and mobility specialist seem scared of it. That's why he has to go to the media so often. His method is effective, but there is so much opposition to it.

Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
