Braille Proofreader – Internship/Training Program

Job Summary:

This onsite, 6 month, literary braille proofreading program consists of twenty lessons and takes 6 months to complete. The final requirement is a thirty-five braille-page trial manuscript that is sent to the Jernigan Institute for grading. Those receiving a passing grade on the trial manuscript will be certified by the Library of Congress. While completing coursework the intern will work directly with other certified proofreaders and shawdow throughout the Braille Print House.

Interns will not receive housing assistance or a food stipend, but will receive an hourly wage during the 6 month program.

Previous interns have gone on to work for Clovernook Center, other Braille Print Houses, or as independent contractors.

This is not a program to learn Braille, but a program to become a certified Braille Proofreader. Upon application into the program all applicants must complete a test verifying basic Braille reading ability and skills.

Compare Braille against print copy to assure accurate transcription, formatting and proper use of Braille codes.* Assist in the training of copyholders and proofreaders in the procedures and processes of the proofreading phase of the Braille translation.

High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
