Meeting with the Band Maroon-5 - An Unforgettable Experience!

03/19/2015

Dear Colleagues:

I want to draw you attention to a recent story featuring a student with a disability that a greater DC news station, WTTG, featured! Brendan O'Connell and WTTG did a story about an amazing boy named Christopher Warner, a kid with Down Syndrome. His dream was to meet Adam Levine and Maroon 5 and he was lucky enough to do that a couple of weeks ago.

You may have seen the picture that went viral of the band getting on the ground with Christopher after Christopher became overwhelmed by meeting Maroon 5. What do you don't see in the picture is the incredible support system that Christopher has from amazing teachers and great parents!

Avery Stanert and Jay Hackett are two of his teachers, that have been instrumental to his learning and progress. Avery calls her Special Ed classroom, Club 157.

Here is her blog about her classroom: http://club157blog.weebly.com/<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJlbWFpbCI6ImJhcmJhcmEuY2FydHdyaWdodEBvb2Qub2hpby5nb3YiLCJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoiMTAwIiwic3Vic2NyaWJlcl9pZCI6IjQwMjM0MjQwOSIsImxpbmtfaWQiOiI4MTc3MDY0IiwidXJpIjoiYnAyOmRpZ2VzdCIsInVybCI6Imh0dHA6Ly9jbHViMTU3YmxvZy53ZWVibHkuY29tLyIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAxNTAzMTkuNDMxMDU3MjEifQ.yFPyZXYaV6qsP-b7p13V09YhmQmz2hP1kXRM5CRBYpk>

Last Chance to Apply for the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Grant Competition! Deadline: March 23rd!

Apply Now to our Group Projects Abroad Grant Competition!
 Deadline: Monday, March 23rd

Did you know that the U.S. Department of Education provides grants to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies?

The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJlbWFpbCI6ImJhcmJhcmEuY2FydHdyaWdodEBvb2Qub2hpby5nb3YiLCJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoiMTAwIiwic3Vic2NyaWJlcl9pZCI6IjQwMjM0MjQwOSIsImxpbmtfaWQiOiI4MzkwODU0IiwidXJpIjoiYnAyOmRpZ2VzdCIsInVybCI6Imh0dHA6Ly93d3cyLmVkLmdvdi9wcm9ncmFtcy9pZWdwc2dwYS9pbmRleC5odG1sIiwiYnVsbGV0aW5faWQiOiIyMDE1MDMyMC40MzE4MzUwMSJ9.02Bmm2gcKckv7oC8H6-kuox3ROiQ9kuit3l9fKkOgV8> program is for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, group research or study, or advanced intensive language programs.

Here's what participants of the GPA program have to say about their experience:

- I can't emphasize enough its importance in changing K-12 educators' professional and personal perspectives that ultimately benefit their students in the classrooms. When teachers learn to walk in other people's shoes, profound changes occur.

- The GPA funding allowed us to give 13 pre- and in-service teachers - including several educators who had never been on a plane or left the state of Texas - a trans-formative experience in Peruvian classrooms. Given the growing diversity of our public schools, GPA provides an invaluable intercultural perspective.

- This funding is crucial because there are very few other sources for sophisticated language study abroad. In the short term, students and educators benefit from overseas experiences in that it broadens their outlook, gives them opportunities for language practice and academic networking. In the long term, the United States benefits from having an educated and multi-lingual citizenry, who also can access the contact that they made while studying abroad.

- The funding allows students, faculty, and educators to have cultural and linguistic immersion they could not otherwise experience. Through this experience, in turn, they will be able to serve as models - in their work and careers - of global citizens and help others here see and appreciate the diversity that exists in cultures and languages.
