[Ohio-talk] new free video player from AFB

Aleeha and all,
OK. I’ve checked this out with the author of the player.
She says it probably could be downloaded by an individual, but they would need to know how to convert the files to get it to work. Her words “it could be done, but it wouldn’t be pretty.”
She was very intrigued that people were interested and I wouldn’t be surprised if she now starts tweaking to make it friendlier for individual use!
So Aleeha, thanks for prompting me to get in touch with an oldfriend and for an exploratory conversation!
And I, for one, do not have the skills to convert files, but do so welcome the introduction of this tool and hope web masters beyond AFB will pick it up and incorporate into their design!

If I am reading the article correctly, a developer must embed this player into their webpage. It can incorporate embedded YouTube videos, but is not meant for the end user to interact with. With HTML 5, one can use screen reader shortcuts to better navigate the videos and control them accessibly.

Aleeha,
Actually, it is meant as a standard player as well, I'm pretty sure, which
means you download it to use on YouTube and such.
At least I do hope that is correct because for those of us who don't have
sighted people constantly in the vicinity, there is currently no accessible
option. You either play the whole thing or not!

After reading into this article, I discovered that the player is for
developers to download and install into their websites. HTML5 has made
drastic accessibility improvements in many areas, including YouTube. But, as
with many things, the responsibility falls on the developer of the website.
We, as consumers, do not need to download this player. I think it's a nice
effort, but I'm not so sure that it's going to go very far.

Since this is such a long link name it may not work. I found it in
press room on the AFB.org website.
