[Ohio-talk] voting

Hello,

I share your frustration.

First, I have to give Cuyahoga County Board of Election a little credit.
They have tried and are doing better. Once I was involved with a group that
visit the Board of Election to have a demonstration on the machine and to
express our concerns as a disable person. It was a group of us that consist
of myself a visually impaired and hearing impaired person, another legally
blind person, a person in a wheel chair, and a person with other multiple
disability that he had difficulty voting using his hands. It was quite an
interesting day for all of us. The funny thing that happen that day was the
machine did not work properly while we were there so they had an opportunity
to see some of what we were referring to. It was an eye opener for those
workers that were there.

I have experienced a time when I went to vote and a person from each party
watch me vote to see if there was any problems or concerns. They had no clue
until I told them on this particular day they were the problem. They stood
behind me and held a conversation which was very rude and distracting. They
did see what I was referring to that while I am voting my back should be to
a wall not allowing anyone to stand behind me and observe me vote.

I also, experience a spoke person from the Board of Election talk about what
they do and what is not permitted on Election Day. They talked about how the
day before each poll site is supposed to be inspected. I told them
obviously, this was not being done when I attempted to vote first ting in
the morning when my poll site opened and of course there was a problem with
the machine.

They say that each poll worker are trained every year. After speaking with
many people that volunteer at election time. They tell me they do not attend
the classes or all of the classes because they have been doing this for
years. Obviously, between the instructor of the class and watching a video
something is wrong!

I once had a poll worker who was trying to help me and I guess she thought I
was stupid and would not realize that she actually voted for me. I reported
what happened and they gave me another ballot.

As we know our voting issues are a continuing frustration. We need to talk
to the head person. Not the person who is over community outreach and not
the person that answered the phone when Richard called. We have to make sure
each of us are properly trained so that when we go vote we are observing and
educating them so they are prepared for the future voters that do not know.

Unfortunately, each county and voting site is different and we all have our
horror stories to tell.

I've been a registered voter in two counties and, each time I've voted, they
have had to reprogram the voting card because they forgot to enable the
speech setting. I'm not sure if they're just not trained on this or if
enough emphasis is not being put on it during the training. Either way,
it's a minor annoyance. It does cost me time, however, so it would be nice
if this could be remedied. Clearly, Richard's email demonstrates their
attitude toward the subject.

I just called the board of elections in my county to request a speaker.
The director called me back and questioned my request by saying you need us
to come to your meeting to tell your members how to put on a head set and
vote?
I told her no but all over this state we have reports of the workers not
knowing how to help so I wanted to make sure our members had hands on
training for themselves with the equipment.
Then she began to tell me about all the great training they provide to all
of the workers and how to help people with disabilities. I told her to have
them to visit our meeting. Positive
