> Dear Federation Family:
> As students of all ages head back to school, life can definitely get hectic. Classes, extracurricular activities, homework, and other activities can fill up the calendar very quickly. As you continue to focus on your community ties this quarter, remember that you don’t have to hold a huge event to establish a presence in your community. Building the Federation can happen anywhere. For example, you could reach out to the parents of your child’s classmates and invite them to lunch. Chances are neither theynor their children know someone who is blind, so this is a quick and easy way to educate them and invite them to check out a chapter meeting. Remember that by simply going out and living the lives we want, we’re showing the people around us that blindness is a characteristic, not a limitation.
> Next month is Meet the Blind Month. There is still plenty of time to hold an event, large or small, in your community. You can order alphabet cards, brochures, and other pieces of literature from the Independence Market. As always, we’d love to hear what your chapter is doing to strengthen your presence in your community. Send an email to membership at nfb.org with your event details. Finally, be sure to share your events with us and your community on social media. Let’s go build the Federation.

> The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
