Meet your national rep for the state convention.

Shawn Callaway is a Program Specialist for the United States Department of
Health and Human Services Administration on Intellectual and Developmental
Disabilities (AIDD).  Prior to working with A.D.D.  He was a Social worker
for the D.C. Department of Behavioral Health (D.B.H.) in Washington, D.C.
He provided counseling and therapeutic services to regular and special
education students in D.C. public schools.  In addition to providing
counseling services, Shawn conducted several community and motivational
workshops in Washington, D.C. on mental health disorders, such as Major
Depressive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. 

 

In 1991, as a college student, Shawn was involved in an accident that caused
him to become permanently blind.  A few years after the accident, he entered
the Workforce Technology Center (W.T.C) in Baltimore, MD.  While at W.T.C.,
Shawn obtained independent living skills and Braille reading training.
After the completion of his training at W.T.C., Shawn enrolled at Essex
Community College in Essex, MD, where he received an Associate's Degree in
Psychology in 1995.  Shawn continued his education at the University of
Maryland in College Park, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in
Psychology.  In 2000, Shawn obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work from
the Catholic University of America.  

 

In 2011, Shawn was elected President of the National Federation of the Blind
of the District of Columbia.  He also served as Chairman of the DC State
Rehabilitation Council and he served on the Boards for the Columbia
Lighthouse for the Blind and the D.C. Center for Independent Living.  In
addition, Shawn is the co-host of a radio show titled "Open Our Eyes" which
focuses on the inclusion of persons with disabilities within our society.
Currently, Shawn resides in Washington, D.C. with his lovely wife of 12
years Mrs. Latonya Callaway and their 2 year old daughter Camille.
