For all who are seeking employment at home; below is a testimony of one of
the job seekers on the Employment Listserve. You may want to apply if you
have the skills the employer is seeking.

Hi all,
I know many on this list are looking for work-from-home jobs, and I'd like
to share my recent experience with a company which has allowed me to do so
and make a little extra money. Several weeks ago, one of our list members,
Adrijana Prokopenko, shared a link to a blog post about jobs one could do
from home. Some of the suggestions were ones I was familiar with, but there
were a few that I hadn't explored before and didn't know much about. One of
those was transcribing, which basically involves listening to audio files
and putting them into text. I thought this was probably something I could
do, as I have lots of experience listening to things being read by my
computer or note taker and putting them into Braille, as many of you might
be able to relate to. Ironically, my reason for looking for something I
could do from home and on my own schedule is that I am waiting for something
to open up in the field of School Counseling where I live, as I completed a
program in this recently, and transcribing audio was one of the skills I
practiced during my time in that program. I looked into one of the companies
which was mentioned in the blog, which is called TranscribeMe. After reading
about how it works, and studying their guidelines and other provided
materials, I applied with them, which basically means passing an exam
demonstrating that you can transcribe according to their specifications and
have a good handle on the English language. I have now spent the past
several weeks transcribing for them. The files you transcribe are usually
short, 2-4 minutes, although some are longer. Payment is based on the length
of the files you transcribe, not how long you actually work, and is $20 per
audio hour. After having certain numbers of files approved, you can apply to
be on special teams which provide more earning opportunities, and you can
also move up to positions like quality assurance and reviewer once you
demonstrate your accuracy and understanding of the transcription guidelines.
There are also exams in other accents and languages that one can take to
open up even more opportunities. For me, this has allowed me to make a
little extra money and have something to add to my resume while I wait for a
position to open. Work can be available at any time and is based on when
files are uploaded and, when there is a lot available, the amount you can
earn is only based on how much you're willing to do. It's nice to have the
possibility for work whenever you happen to be available and, if you're able
to advance to special projects and/or higher positions, there is usually no
shortage of work. There are other companies which do similar things, but I
didn't really look into them so only know about TranscribeMe. If anyone is
interested in checking them out, they are at www.transcribeme.com. I will
also add that if you work for them, their platform only works with Google
Chrome. I apologize for the long email but thought this might be of interest
to some and hope it is helpful to someone. I would also like to thank
Adrijana for sharing the post that allowed me to learn about this company
and all she does to provide information and opportunities for the blind. If
I may provide any other information about transcribing with TranscribeMe,
please let me know, and feel free to write me off-list. Thanks, and hope
everyone has a very happy new year!
Danielle Manke
