Hello,

This is Vince Fugate, and I am interested in what Cheryl Fields has to say,
but I no longer live in the Cuyahoga County.  Could someone please email me
a summary of her presentation, or put me in contact with her.

I was a volunteer at the Cleveland Sight Center for their preschool program
for 2 years, and I am interested in doing something like that again.

Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Richard that is a great idea. milena and I are brainstorming on local
issue first. She will post phone number of Mayors office for us to
call. Less than 7 days for decision.
State issue is ultra important too. I would suggest let's do
everything however, it would be beneficial if the state legislative
committee provides the most effective verbage for us to be heard
collectively, one voice with the same message. Letters, e mails, phone
calls, visits to our state reps offices... what ever it takes I'm in
favor of us doing it!
Stronger Together!...

Greetings Friends,

Today I spoke with Beth from the Mayor's Office.  She tells me that the reason for not opening up Public Square to buses is not because businesses are against it.  It's because Mayor Jackson is concerned about keeping pedestrians safe from buses traveling through that area.  Mayor Jackson spoke to the Cleveland Board of Directors, and I was told that they're on the same page.  I don't agree, but I am just one person.  We need to express our displeasure at the closing of Public Square.  I'm sure the mayor is aware that he is failing to comply with the agreement from FTA that states that at least $12 million will need to be paid back.

If you want to voice your opinion, call the Mayor's Action Center at (216) 664-2900 or e-mail the office at
communications at city.cleveland.oh.us

I am in the process of getting a representative from the Mayor's Office to come to our meeting.  If necessary to have an impromptu meeting, how many of you would be willing to show up so I don't embarrass myself presenting the speaker with an empty room?

Anyway, we have until February 21st to respond, and Mayor Jackson also has the same deadline to provide the public with an answer.

More to follow.

Milena

Thanks the NFBO passed a resolution  which  includes language about
transportation  it is the  policy of  the NFBO  at the 2016 state
convention. I would encourage all of us to help out with emails and phone
calls to let them know how important this issue is to us.

Resolution 2016-01

Establishing Public Transportation as a Basic Civil Right for Every Ohioan

WHEREAS, all citizens of this country are guaranteed under
the U.S. Constitution and subsequent statutes various civil rights,
including equal access to opportunities that promote our individual welfare
and enable our pursuit of happiness, regardless of race, age, religion,
nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or physical or financial ability;
and

WHEREAS, the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
ensures all people  access to  public venues, but transportation is often
not in place for blind people  or those who have other disabilities to reach
all locations; and

WHEREAS, public and private resources continue to be used to
subsidize more and wider roads, free parking, and the relocation of jobs and
services farther away from existing, underfunded transit services and
communities; and

WHEREAS, countless qualified blind job seekers and people
with other disabilities are not  able to drive personal cars; Therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Federation of the Blind of
Ohio, in Convention assembled  this thirteenth day of November, 2016, in the
City of Independence, Ohio, urge the passage of legislation in Ohio to

I just spoke with Jackie Sutton-Special Assistant to the Mayor.
She is going to send my concerns to the Mayor.

1. Keeping the square closed is a violation of my civil rights and the ADA.
Having access denied prevents me from participating in activities on
the square, eating at the restaurants and public green space....

2. Closing the square permenatly will create a major defecet for RTA
and that will directly effect access to transportation cost for
riders. It will cause RTA to limit services that are currently
provided.

3. I reinforced that the blind community is willing to meet with him,
prior to his final decision.
Ms. Sutton assured me that she will give the Mayor this information
and send meeting request to proper department. She says that RTA  may
be granted another extention and that he never said that the square
will be closed permentaly, only until the study is completed. Well,
studies, 2, were completed last week and Superior Avenue was not found
to be dangerous for pedestrians if buses are allowed into Public
Square.
I also expressed to her how proud we were to have the Mayor at the
state convention.
Please if you care about the future of transportation in Cuyahoga
County and surrounding counties call or e mail the mayors office asap.
If you are unsure of what is going on with the closing of Public
Square to buses, use Newsline to read the Plain Dealer articles, great
reporting. Join the face book group-Clevelanders for Equitible Public
Transportation, great group, very active on this subject and others in
Cleveland and Akron.

Subject: [External] Re: [Ohio-talk] Public Square Update

I just spoke with Jackie Sutton-Special Assistant to the Mayor.
She is going to send my concerns to the Mayor.

1. Keeping the square closed is a violation of my civil rights and the ADA.
Having access denied prevents me from participating in activities on the square, eating at the restaurants and public green space....

2. Closing the square permenatly will create a major defecet for RTA and that will directly effect access to transportation cost for riders. It will cause RTA to limit services that are currently provided.

3. I reinforced that the blind community is willing to meet with him, prior to his final decision.
Ms. Sutton assured me that she will give the Mayor this information and send meeting request to proper department. She says that RTA  may be granted another extention and that he never said that the square will be closed permentaly, only until the study is completed. Well, studies, 2, were completed last week and Superior Avenue was not found to be dangerous for pedestrians if buses are allowed into Public Square.
I also expressed to her how proud we were to have the Mayor at the state convention.
Please if you care about the future of transportation in Cuyahoga County and surrounding counties call or e mail the mayors office asap.
If you are unsure of what is going on with the closing of Public Square to buses, use Newsline to read the Plain Dealer articles, great reporting. Join the face book group-Clevelanders for Equitible Public Transportation, great group, very active on this subject and others in Cleveland and Akron.
