[Ohio-talk] OOD and Braille

Hello Fellow Federationists,
When we participated in the statewide OOD training meeting on August 30, 2016, the common theme throughout the day was consumer choice and the need for braille. Every counselor, supervisor and manager was in attendance. At our state convention, we reiterated this theme in the general session, and in the job workshop. Apparently, all of this had fallen on deaf ears - again.
If you read the letter from Elizabeth Sammons, that President Payne put at the end of his email, OOD has invited themselves to each of our chapter meetings. This is yet another opportunity to have our voices heard. I urge all chapter presidents to take them up on this invitation.
We need to show them that we will not give up, and we will not go away, until we are truly living the lives we want.
Sheri Albers

I would like to know why OOD doesn't assist with Braille technology for those who are long time Braille users. I have been denied repeatedly, told I need to learn to listen and record. I have been a Braille user since age four. I certainly do think that listening skills are important but not to the exclusion of a means of reading and writing. When I was an elementary student at OSSB we had a class called Listening Skills. It was held once a week in the speech room. We had listening exercises with tests, recorded plays, played games and who can remember what else after all these years.
At our convention I was told that it was unreasonable to expect tax payers to pay for the expense of anything Braille because all the equipment is costly, the production is costly and so is the instruction. Perhaps some of the determination about services provided is dependent upon the individual counselor and their personal understanding and beliefs of the system.
We should all be thankful for the services we have received, realize that not all are as fortunate, and be willing as Federationests to fight for the rights of all.

I think it's a great idea to have someone from OOD on the OAPUB call. We will have many questions for them regarding braille instruction! Thanks for organizing this and please keep us posted on the date for the call.

So, I have been out of the email loop, but are we talking about OOD has NEVER provided braille instruction for consumers? Or they only provide it "sometimes"? I probably cannot participate in this conversation because BSVI has provided braille instruction for me. This did not happen at first. I was originally denied many years ago and I then decided to pay for my own, when Bernie Dressell was my instructor, but when I was going to start college in 2013, they paid for lessons with Deborah Kendrick.
I guess a question could be, why pay for some, and not for others?
Thanks,
Sheri Albers

Richard and al federation members. I would love to have a NAPUB phone call in February and invite OOD to participate in this call. I would like answers to questions about why OOD does not provide braille instruction to consumers in Ohio. Before I schedule this meeting I would like feedback. I would hope the meeting would be well attended so OOD understands that we are serious about braille instruction. Please share your thoughts.
