Morning
Despite a major error with Para transit which I won't get into yesterday's ADA celebration was a success!! I was able to display my textural artwork, I had a lot of people who came by and got to feel the artwork! I was very pleased that it worked out and really want to thank the ADA Celebration for their help! Things do work out in the end for good.

Could someone please advise me the best way to move to a new area if your
blind.

The reason I am asking this is because I have always relied on sighted help
to move, and every time I do that that I find myself in a bad situation.

I live in Northfield Ohio in Summit county, but I would like to move back
into the Cleveland area.  I'm thinking Parma, or Lakewood might be good
unless someone knows of some place better.  The reason I want to move is
because I'm too isolated in Northfield, there is no good bus line, or
reasonable social and employment opportunities in this area, and I miss my
NFB chapters in Cleveland.

I can cover the expenses of moving, but I'm not sure how to find a good
place on my own.

Vincent,

There are many areas in which would be accommodating for you.  The first
step you have accomplished by reaching out to the NFB.  Therefore, Parma,
North Olmstead, Cleveland Heights, Mayfield and Downtown has members of the
organization that are comfortable in where they live.  If you would need
personal assistance, feel free to call me.  I am also sure anyone in those
areas can help.  We have assisted others before with housing, transportation
and more..

I looked into a property in Lakewood and the neighborhood seemed quiet and had busing. It was through Binion properties. It wasn't too bad-just a bit of a long ride for me when I'm working in University Circle. I'm moving to the Cleveland Heights area and Binion has some properties there near bus lines, too. Maybe try checking them out. HTH.

Hi Vincent, glad to know you'll be back in Cleveland!

I have found that a great move begins with lots of organization:

If you are pleased with your present location, management... talk to
them before giving your notice. Many management companies have several
properties or may know of other properties that are comparable to
where you are living now.

Decide on a neighborhood and find people you trust, that live there
to give you good information.
Some real estate companies will find you a rental. There are new
residential buildings being built all over the city, especially
University Circle.

Make sure that the places that are important to you are within a
reasonable distance. Shopping, cleaners, restaurants, entertainment,
worship....

Packing and the acctuall move. Do not skimp on this! Downsize before
the move! Storage costs a fortune! Use sturdy boxes, containers, do
notmake them heavier than you can lift alone. Label them so you can
identify them the day after you are installed into your new location.
This is also a great time to label all that stuff that you rely on
sighted people to identify, lol!
Use a reputable mover, such as 2 Men and a Truck. Make sure they are
bonded and get a contract.

I hope this helps you a little. We are here if you need more, lol!
Cheryl Fields Happy Moving!

Medication Safety Awareness
for the Blind Week

September 9-15, 2017

Medication Safety begins with being able to read the label.
Nearly 14 million Americans have low vision or are blind, including many seniors over the age of 65.  For these individuals, not being about to clearly read a prescription label can result in medication errors, unnecessary injury or even death. Audible, large-print and Braille formats and are most often provided by pharmacies at no cost in compliance with the American's with Disabilities Act. There are many pharmacies that already provide this FREE service but do not advertise it.

Medication Safety Awareness for the Blind week is a great opportunity to let your community know that those who are low vision or blind can get FREE audible, large print and Braille prescription labels. Plan an awareness activity during the week of September 9-15th.  Sign up to receive a Participation Kit which includes brochures and a ScripTalk demonstration unit.  You can also download the "How to Help Save Lives Handout" for more ideas.

Hi Vincent:

Here's the thing. There are two things to consider for transportation
accessibility. These don't go all the way across the board, but it seems
that for Akron, it's pretty consistent.

The closer you get to Kent State university or Tri-C, the better the
public transportation will be. (the rhyme was not intentional!)

Also, Scat is your friend! At least for those places (Like along Smith
Rd), that may be harder/dangerous for a blind person to walk safely along.

Also, it depends what you are wanting to do in Cleveland, but there are
several Akron Metro buses that travel there many many times a day.

For akron metro, please note,, Apple Maps has an updated bus schedule
while Google maps does not!

For cost on metro/scat. On metro, it is 5$.50 a ride. On scat, it is
around $2 per ride (something like 2.50? not 100% sure on that.)

Also for doctor/medical appointments, make use of NET (Non Emergency
Transportation) The most reliable company I have found is City Yellow
Cab on Home Ave.

Cleveland Heights is a great place to live, but I've heard it is higher
up in price for Cost of living.

If price is an issue for you, I would look more toward Barberton. (if
you do go the barberton route, stay away from places on 24th and 25th
streets. The intersection of Second and Tusc is a great area to look
around. At least 3 different buses stop at that intersection.

If you want to lean more toward the Akron Area, look up Portage Path
Housing Assistance. (Not connected with Portage Path Behavioral Health!
I made that mistake before)

I don't know how much My roommates and I would be able to help with the
actual moving process, but contact me off list and we can try to
coordinate. (We have a huge Ford f-250 Van that has been adapted for
wheelchair use. (Floor dropped about 6 inches.) We actually just helped
a friend move to akron from Indiana and we got all of her stuff in one
go. (It took some tetras playing, but we did it!

Hope all of this helped, and if you have any questions, please reach
out. I'd be happy to help in any way that I can.

Good luck!

Abby

It wasn't too bad-just a bit of a long ride for me when I'm working in University Circle. I'm moving to the Cleveland Heights area and Binion has some properties there near bus lines, too. Maybe try checking them out. HTH.
