One of the more unique organizational traits of the National Federation of
the Blind is the central role that songs have played in the community that
is the Federation. The first NFB song contest was held in 1969, which
resulted in the adoption of the Federation's first official song, "The
Battle Hymn of the NFB," better known to many as, "Glory, Glory Federation."
In the years since then, members of the NFB have utilized song for a variety
of situations and for many reasons, but the three main sources for
inspiration have been to protest against people and organizations believed
to be acting against the interests of blind people, to define and vocalize
Federation philosophy, and to celebrate what became known as "the organized
blind movement." Song topics have included ineffective, inept, and custodial
rehabilitation; mismanagement of services for the blind by the government
and various agencies; the dangers of quiet cars; the battle with airlines to
hold onto canes and sit in exit-rows; and the struggle against the National
Accreditation Council for Blind and Low Vision Services (NAC).

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back
