[Ohio-talk] ReThe Dintech Cane

Good comments. I assisted my Man-Friend in raising his twin girls. One is
a Human Factors Engineer for Honda. I have educated her on what you just
talked about. And she agrees with me because during her college education
nothing was ever said how to develop ideas with those that have a
disability.

Sad but true.

Hi Milena,
I suspect you are right that they will be at the convention. And, actually,
I might eventually be interested in writing a review of this thing. My
point is to say yes, thank you for posting anything you see that others
might be interested in because sharing information is at the core of how we
can support one another.
It is an old problem -- not just with blindness, but with all disabilities -
that well-intentioned folks think they know exactly how to make life better
for us, but they forget to ask us! I wrote a column about it years ago that
was inspired when I learned about a library in my community that, to make
its entrance accessible, installed a long, steep ramp, with just enough room
at the top for a wheelchair. Problem was, if you were in a wheelchair, you
needed to turn when you got up there to go through the door, and the
platform did not allow for turning space.
Another long-time favorite example of such blunders is the sign I found
myself in a phone kiosk in a hotel lobby in Cincinnati. I would never have
known it was there, but my then husband told me to check out the wall above
my head. I reached as far as I could -- my fingertips just reached it, so
it was six or seven feet from the floor -- and there it was, a braille sign
that said: NO SMOKING!
Pretty hilarious, but sad, too
On a personal note, I have been working with a wonderful O&M instructor here
in Florida who has an engineer friend who likes inventing. She asked him
about inventing a walkerthat wold enable a person to handle a white cane.
He told her he has it, but we are both super skeptical in that he knows
nothing of how a white cane is used and never got back to her to ask for
details.
Ahhhhhhhh. Alas. The bottom line is we all need to keep educating,
educating, educating, and trying to smile with patience as we do so.
Thank you, Milena, for sharing any information you see and thank you for
putting up with this rant!

Peace,
Deborah

Hi Deborah,

Yes, I agree with you about the offensive language. These guys want you to
think that the Dintech Cane is your only friend and that you can't do
without it because you'll feel lonely. I don't know how this device will
play out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it appeared at the NFB national
convention's exhibit hall.

No, there's no New York airport. There's Kennedy and LaGuardia, and I don't
think the dintech cane has a feature that allows you to tread water across
the big pond. Let's just say that the intention of this company is to
better the lives of the blind, but, as many others that have tried in the
past, they need some education to erase the ignorance.

I post items from the NFB of New Jersey's Technology List just for
everyone's edification, even though I might not agree with the philosophy of
the manufacturer.

By the way, if anyone is looking for some classes on using iPhones, iPads or
other devices, Mystic Access has free training, both free or paid. It pays
to sign up. I did!

use and its claims. We are the best judges of our surroundings, and we
control our environment with the knowledge and wisdom imparted to us from
experience. No amount of technology can ever replace that.
