Yesterday Eric asked us to write to Senators Brown and Portman about two pieces of legislation. Here are the names and email addresses for the legislative directors in case ou have not found them.
Pam Thiessen is Senator Rob Portman’s legislative director. Her email is pam_thiessen at portman.senate.gov <mailto:pam_thiessen at portman.senate.gov>.
Jeremy Hekhuis is Senator Sherrod Brown’s legislative director. His email isjeremy_hekhuis at brown.senate.gov <mailto:jeremy_hekhuis at brown.senate.gov>.
For your help, I will drop in below the message I have sent and blind copied to Jeff Kaloc at jkaloc at nfb.org <mailto:jkaloc at nfb.org>. You can adapt it for your use if you like. Please take the time to get this job done before Friday.
Hello, my name is Barbara Pierce. I live in Oberlin, Ohio. The House recently passed H.R. 4686, Sami’s Law. This bill will make it safer for all people, including blind people, to use rideshare companies, and I urge you to vote in favor of this legislation when it is considered in the Senate. Additionally, I would strongly urge you to propose an amendment to strike Section 181(a)(1)(G) and Section 181(b) from S. 4317, the SAFE TO WORK Act. The language currently contained in Section 181 critically weakens the protections for disabled Americans set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Please ensure that the protections of the ADA are maintained by amending this legislation. Thank you.”

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise expectations for blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and their dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
