I contacted my insurance provider and spoke with one of their care coaches
on Fri. March 13 when this was really starting to hit hard regarding how I
could be tested. For some context, my insurance is a Medicare Senior
Advantage Plan through Medicare (Part C -D), which is something that I
realize not all members have access to. I get access to a telehealth app
which is reasonably accessible with my iPhone and VoiceOver.
Here is what she told me:
When you start to feel as if you have symptoms, contact your primary care
physician (or better yet, your telehealth provider). Most providers like
MDLive, which is what I have, can be contacted through their app, a web site
or by telephone. Again, my telehealth provider's app (at least) is
reasonably accessible.
When you talk with the Dr., explain your symptoms. The Dr. will run through
a checklist of questions provided by the CDC . If your dr. decides you need
to go for further evaluation / testing (and this may not happen at this
point for most of us as they are only testing those who are hospitalized
now), you need to explain to the Dr. that you are blind and cannot drive.
When you do this, you need to consider that you could be spreading the virus
to a transportation provider (like Uber, paratransit, family or what have
you) if they took you to a testing site or the hospital. Ask the Dr. for a
pre-authorization for non-emergency transportation from an ambulance service
or medical transportation provider through your insurance carrier. Your
county health department may also be able to arrange transportation if they
deem it necessary and testing supplies are available--all are huge issues
right now.
I realize this isn't exactly in tune with Federation philosophy, but your
goal now is to minimize the potential that you will be making a driver or
someone else around you sick if you decide to travel to a testing site or
medical provider independently because you think you might have the virus.
This is what I've heard so far and maybe Richard or someone else could chime
in here.

a local perspective. Our goal for this call is to provide some encouragement
and if possible, some local resources for not only our members, but for
the entire blind community in Ohio. In preparation for the call, I need your
