Ohio,

As I am watching the news, I am reminded how much I miss my granddaughter,
Jordyn. I have not seen her in around four months now. Her birthday was in
June and no hug and kisses to celebrate her 7th year anniversary from
grandma.

We, who are grandparents hold a special place in our hearts for those who
resemble our children. However, now we are able to tolerate more; feet on
the couch, leaving clothing on the floor and even eating candy before bed. I
would have never let my girls do this. And, my adult children remind me
often that I am relaxed, unfair and not right.

During this pandemic and now that the levels have doubled, today is not a
good day for me. I want to see my little one. Just to have her whisper at
bed time good night is haunting me. Not only that, she goes to school
everyday and I am terrified.

Nevertheless, What gives me comfort is my Ohio Federation family. This past
Sunday was Sharing Solutions for Vision Loss Teleconference Call and there
is always those who give me hope and inspiration. On this call was a new
member who is struggling with her blindness. However, everyone on the call
were so humble, patient and caring toward her. They answered her questions
on blindness, provided community resources and showed empathy. Certainly
one-on-one interaction is great, but having conference calls like this and
the Check-In Call has mint more than you know to those who live alone and
afraid of contracting the virus.

Thank you Ohio for all that you do for me and others. Thank you for
continuing to care and uphold the mission of the organization by bringing
people into a network of thousands of blind people. And, thank you for your
unwavering service to your fellow man.

If you are reading this, I feel so much better because you are out there.
Even though, I want to see my grandchildren, I know that you understand what
I am going through; and I know that if I need you, you are there!

When this is all over, I am going to plan the biggest Grandparent Day event
for the NFB of Ohio!

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
