AWARENEWS Summer 2021

FROM OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Shannon Monyak

Happy Summer to Everyone!

Spring just flew by and there were so many exciting things that happened at SIL that have had such a positive impact on our local communities.

In May we had Older American’s Month, Pride Day in June, as well as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The Olmsted Decision celebrated it’s 22-year anniversary….and I am only hitting the tip of the iceberg with respect to all the disability recognition days! We were thankful, yet cautious, when Governor DeWine lifted the state mandate, allowing the world to “re-open.” This was vital to SIL and the people we serve, so we have been able to begin to deliver more of our amazing services in person! For those who are still hesitant about face-to-face contact, we still offer virtual trainings and meetings.

At the beginning of June, SIL hosted a virtual regional Youth Leadership Forum for the second year in a row. This wonderful event was sponsored in part by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) and the Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council (OSILC). Delegates were educated on advocacy, public policy, the Independent Living movement, career preparation, resume building, and aspects of leadership. We wish the 2021 graduates the best in their future endeavors.

July 1st marks my one-year anniversary as the agency’s Executive Director. I look back on all that has occurred in my time and am so proud of all the obstacles we have overcome, and accomplishments achieved by the staff during a global pandemic. I am also proud of the consumers we serve who reached out when they needed support and did not know who to turn to. Everyone grew this past year.

With vaccinations readily available these days, the light is at the end of this pandemic tunnel. We still have work to do, but exciting times are on the horizon.

With regard to COVID-19 vaccines, depending on your personal preferences, should you or a family member, caregiver, neighbor, or friend need assistance with scheduling a vaccine appointment, need help getting to a vaccine appointment or need a companion the day of your appointment – please call us, we are here to help!

I wish you all a safe and healthy summer, enjoy your friends and family, relax, and soak up the sun. SIL staff and I will be doing the same things, in addition to gearing up for summer programs and prepping for fall events and trainings. Keep checking back to our website for all the exciting details or call us to find out more!

And as always, remember, we are IN IT WITH YOU!

Shannon Monyak

If you had to choose one thing about SIL that makes you the proudest to be a part of it, what would that be?
Wow… Such a tough question to choose just one. So let me just broadly answer it this way: every piece of evidence I have, every moment I have experienced (whether at the offices, the Board room, or the Forum), has shown me that SIL places it’s Consumer‘s first at all times. Egos are left at the door and the overriding principles and questions to be answered are: how will this affect our consumer’s lives? How will this improve their daily activities? And how can we improve our offerings to do better by them. This process makes me extremely proud to be affiliated with SIL.

What’s something you saw recently that made you smile?
My daughter constantly makes me smile. She truly is a miracle in my life. As a quadriplegic, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to be a father. And yet, after almost 30 years in a wheelchair, I have an amazing family, wife, and 5-year old daughter who make me smile every single day. When I was first injured in California in 1992, agencies with similar missions as SIL aided my journey back to recovery. I think that’s why I’m so passionate about giving back now. I want to share the smile I’m so blessed to wear with those who have not yet found their own yet. And I know, perhaps better than many, that happiness, joy, and gratitude are within all of our reach. I am confident that SIL can be a huge portion of that process for so many.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
So now you bring out the tough questions, huh? Well...

The ADA & Effective Communication in Health Care:

What Does Effective Communication Mean?

  _____

July 28, 2021
11:00am - 12:00pm EST

What does it mean to communicate effectively with an individual who is deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened or deaf-blind? What are the obligations of health care providers and other covered entities (i.e. hospitals, doctors’ offices) in ensuring effective communication?

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requires all covered entities to provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services when needed to communicate effectively with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened or deaf blind. This presentation will provide brief overview of the requirements of Titles II and III of the ADA as they pertain to effective communication. Additionally, the presentation will address the availability and proper use of “auxiliary aids and services” that can eliminate barriers, share best practices to facilitate and ensure effective communication; and provide tips and strategies for communicating with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened or deaf-blind.
