Delcenia,
You asked, " Ending question. Have everyone read the paragraph on the bottom
of your discharge papers that we are signing when they release us from the
hospital and/or doctor?"
Perhaps someone has read it to me, but I do not recall. What does it say?
Cheryl.

Subject: Re: [Ohio-Talk] Question for discussion

Hello,
Advance apology for being long winded and some conflicting answers First a
short background. As a person with a disability, a "able" husband and "able"
daughter". We all were faced with the same instructions. The hospital/doctor
always said: 1. The patient could not drive themselves home, 2. We could
not use a bus, Lyft/cab and the patient could not leave by themselves.

After my husband's procedure we wen through the same thing. We made sure we
had a family member drive him home and not Uber.

My daughter has gone through the same "hospital/doctor requirements". In
the beginning at one of her procedures her spouse had to arrive and leave
with her on Uber. During another one of her times of not having a vehicle
after a procedure, they have cancelled her procedure until she had a person
present before and after her procedure with a vehicle that was not Uber.
This is one of the example of how things are changing.

As a person with a disability and my brother's care giver in all of his
situation I did not have a problem getting him home when I use medical
transportation after his colonoscopy.

In 2002 I worked for a hospital and it never fails that Paratransit got me
to work too early. They were concern that I was there and no supervisor or
anyone there in that department. So, they changed my hours and I was happy
with that. It was change to 4 days 10 hours a day to equal 40 hours instead
of 5 days of 8-hour week consisting of 40 hours.

I do not feel we should take this personally or think this is a
discrimination. I believe it is all about liability. And yes, we have to
keep educating the public. Also, yes, there are a few people that does not
know that people with a disability are well capable of taking care of
things.

The hospital/ doctor is still responsible for the patient while they are on
the facility and after. Just like when something happened to our children
during school time and on school property and sometime on the way home while
on the bus or walking home.

We all have heard and read about situation when a woman was raped and taken
advantage of after using Uber. I have heard and read about a person who had
been released from the hospital and fell and sued the hospital. There have
been numerous other situations.

This is why hospitals and doctors are constantly changing. They do not want
to be liable if something happens to the patient or employee.

Ending question. Have everyone read the paragraph on the bottom of your
discharge papers that we are signing when they release us from the hospital
and/or doctor?

Delcenia

Have you ever accompanied someone home after surgery using a ride share? Can
a hospital or doctor's office refuse to let you do this as a blind person?
If you had trouble what did you do?
