Subject: Graduate Student Master's Thesis: Looking For People to Participate In An Interview
Hello Mr. Choi,
My name is Alysa Massey, and I am a graduate student in the Speech-Language Pathology program working with Dr. Jayanti Ray, faculty research advisor at Southeast Missouri State University. We met briefly at the Missouri National Federation of the Blind Conference in St. Louis earlier this year. Thank you for allowing me to speak to some of your student members at that event. However, I am still looking for people from the ages of 20 to 30 to complete an interview as part of my master's thesis. I wanted to know if you had any advice on where I could share this information or if you would be willing to share my information with your members. Her is my recruitment information below and I have also attached a flyer.
We want to collect information about adults with blind and visual impairments experiences during high school. Specifically, their perceptions on assistive technology services, career services, and how their use of assistive technology impacted their independence and quality of life then and now. I am seeking approximately 15 participants to participate in a 45-minute interview. Participants must be over 18 years, participate in special education services in high school, and use assistive technology. Participant involvement is entirely voluntary and requires one 45-minute interview. There will be time for additional comments the participant would like to discuss. There are 18 interview questions, and these questions will have topics like what is involved in their transition plan, what kind of assistive technology they use, and how they feel these areas have helped them prepare for future employment after high school. All personal information will not be associated directly with the participant during the study. All data will be secured in a password protected computer on Southeast Missouri State University's campus in Grauel112F. This data will only be accessed by the student and lead researcher of this study. This study will add more perspectives regarding transitional services for blind high school students. The study will provide retrospective perceptions from blind adults and will provide information to allow educators to adjust services to contribute to practical and successful outcomes for people who are blind and visually impaired. This study can also provide information for effective collaboration with professionals on an individualized education plan team to create meaningful and beneficial services for this population and their future careers and success. This information can create a better system for future students.
The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Southeast Missouri State University. If you have any unanswered questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant, contact the Institutional Review Board at irb at semo.edu or call Jennifer Bengtson, IRB chair, at (573) 651-2146.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your time and any help you can give me.
If you have any questions, please contact me or Dr. Jayanti Ray. Thank you for your time!

The National Federation of the Blind
knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your
future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low
expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can
live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
