To Amplify what Richard has said here, one way to fool proof these kind of things is simply to check with the supposed sender no matter who it is. No one will ever get a message from a leader in this organization or any other organization asking for money, gift cards, or other things immediately. 
However, if after reading a message confirm with the sender before taking action. Many people fall for something saying a grand child needs help immediately. Check with that grand child or their parents before taking action. Scammers put a since of urgency in the message so you will not take the time to verify.
