Goodmorning deafblind participants and supporters,
June is DeafBlind Awareness Month, a time to recognize, celebrate, and
raise awareness about individuals who are DeafBlind and the unique
experiences they bring to our communities.
DeafBlindness is a combination of vision and hearing loss that affects
communication, access to information, and mobility. DeafBlind people are a
diverse group with varying levels of vision and hearing and use a variety
of communication methods, including braille, sign language, tactile sign
language, speech, assistive technology, and support service providers.
Some important facts about DeafBlindness:
• June was chosen as DeafBlind Awareness Month because it includes the
birthday of Helen Keller (June 27, 1880), one of the most well-known
DeafBlind advocates in history.
• DeafBlindness is considered a unique disability because the combination
of hearing and vision loss creates challenges that are different from
having either disability alone.
• Many DeafBlind individuals live independently, work, attend school, raise
families, volunteer, and contribute to their communities when provided with
appropriate accommodations and support.
• Access to information, communication, transportation, and technology is
essential for DeafBlind individuals to participate fully in society.
• DeafBlind people are not all completely deaf or completely blind. Levels
of hearing and vision vary greatly from person to person.
This month, I encourage everyone to learn more about DeafBlindness, promote
accessibility and inclusion, and help amplify the voices of DeafBlind
individuals.
Together, we can create communities where everyone has equal opportunities
to participate, contribute, and thrive.
Happy DeafBlind Awareness Month!
Sincerely,
NFB OHIO DEAFBLIND COMMITTEE
