Subject: [Ohio-Talk] Discrimination Experience at Mr. Pond Shop in Dayton
On my recent visit to Mr. Pond Shop in Dayton, I intended to purchase a firearm. During my interaction with Fred, an employee at the store, he assisted me by showing several guns. However, after this initial assistance, Fred mentioned that he needed to consult with his boss, Mike, regarding legal requirements due to my condition. Fred clarified, after speaking with Mike, that their concern was specifically because I am blind and had to fill out the printed forms with no assistance.
The actions taken by Fred and Mike were not only discriminatory but also demonstrated a lack of understanding of the relevant laws. A simple online search would reveal that if a blind individual requests assistance in filling out forms and as long as that individual understands the questions—there is no legal barrier to completing the purchase. Despite this, I was denied service due to my disability.
This experience of discrimination has prompted me to document the incident and consider seeking legal advice regarding the treatment I received at Mr. Pond Shop.

The National Federation of the Blind advances the lives of its members and all blind people in the United States. We know that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Our collective power, determination, and diversity achieve the aspirations of all blind people.
