NFB Songs
One of the more unique organizational traits of the National Federation of
the Blind is the central role that songs have played in our community.
The first NFB song contest was held in 1969, which resulted in the adoption
of the Federation's first official song, "The Battle Hymn of the NFB,"
better known to many as, "Glory, Glory Federation."
In the years since then, members of the NFB have utilized song for a variety
of situations and for many reasons, but the three main sources for
inspiration have been to protest against people and organizations believed
to be acting against the interests of blind people, to define and vocalize
Federation philosophy, and to celebrate what became known as "the organized
blind movement."
For more information on the history of NFB songs, please read Barbara
Pierce's article, "Singing Our Story: Federation History in Song
<https://nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm13/bm1307/bm130702.htm> ,"
from the July 2013 issue of the Braille Monitor.
The members of the Federation continue to generate new artistic expressions
of the heartbeat of the movement and the lived experience of blind people.
Official content - new and historical - will be archived here.

The National Federation of the Blind advances the lives of its members and
all blind people in the United States. We know that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. Our collective power, determination,
and diversity achieve the aspirations of all blind people.
