[Perform-talk] Talent Show?

Jorge,
As somebody said earlier on this list, stop complaining and do something to help if you want. I haven't been an NFB member for a long time but I was at convention last year. I saw how hard members of the performing arts division worked in order to make the talent show and everything else happen, and I do believe that if the recording quality and stage sound weren't better it's because right then and at that particular point in time, they couldn't be improved. I have performed a lot and in many places, with many conductors, many orchestras. I have also had to use all kinds of instruments. Some are better and some are worse. What's clear is that the quality of our work does not always depend on how good the recording is or on how good the speakers sound. If things can be improved, then I'm sure they will improve. But if there are no funds or funds must be used for more important matters such as the Sound and Sight cd's then people will have to work with what we have and with whatever equipment that other members want to contribute with.
A couple of weeks ago I broke a string in the middle range of the piano while playing the Liszt b minor sonata in a recital. I could have stopped and complained about the fact that the piano was not ready for the concert or I could have yelled asking for the string to be replaced immediately. But I just kept playing because that's what anybody in their sane mind would have done. Would I have done the same if somebody from Sony had been there? Of course I would! Some things sounded really crappy with a broken string, which made two notes basically unplayable. But there was nothing I could do about it other than to make sure that the piano is in a better condition next time.

The talent show is just another way to enjoy the convention, and the careers of blind people are not on the line. If the division were to get imagination fund money, we would put it towards projects that put blind people out there in the mainstreem market. I guess this talent show issue just gives some people something to talk about.
