[Perform-Talk] yet another influence for me...

Ha, I forgot another key one for me: Rush. Again, one that would shock some of my peers, because Geddy Lee is an Atheist—but you don’t have to espouse someone’s views to like their music. I do have enough ideology in common that much of what they say holds a lot of truth, for me, and whatever doesn’t, there’s always the “off button” in your brain! I love Geddy’s bass—he was the first to draw to my attention that a bass can carry substantial melodic lines; and Neil Peart, as far as lyrics go, there’s no one like him; I really miss the days of the epic albums where they’d spin off some sci-fi or Greek mythology—a particular draw for a brainiac! again, wish I could find a Christian band willing to experiment with off-rhythms, real melodic bass-lines, and thought-provoking lyrics as Rush does. I never got to see Rush or the Who, so am unhappy they’re quitting touring—but it’s understandable. I have, however, seen Neil Sedaka, the Moody Blues (twice: once as a teen when they were touring to promote the “Octave” album; again in 2014, not promoting anything, and that was even better, because they brought out all the crowd-pleasers and went basically through excerpts from their entire catalog, and they still got it goin’ on; Amy Grant and Russ Taff; Tina Turner; Res (formerly known as the Resurrection Band); and TransSiberian Orchestra. Would love to see the Moodies and TSO again, and also u2.

I had the worst crush on Roger Daltrey of the Who, when I was a teenager—mostly because, between the Who and his solo work, he really mixed the styles. Plus, although he doesn’t have as flexible a vocal range as in the past, he has learned to get around that by substituting notes that do work, and, compared to poor Elton John, who maybe only now has an octave, sadly, he has really kept limber, for the most part. So, I’m still pretty impressed with Daltrey.
