I have gone out to clubs with friends, listened to DJs, hear what they might be trying to do at a particular point and reacts well if they've made something work I have gone out to clubs with friends, listened to DJs, hear what they might be trying to do at a particular point and reacts well if they've made something work, or react negatively if they just miss doing what they meant to do. I have definitely been known to react in such a way as if I heard them scratch nails across a chalkboard if it looks bad. Many of my friends don't get it, but it's the same type of thing.
I have a friend who watches "the voice" and always has something to say about someone's voice. I am sure this is because of their musical background, but I find it to be very entertaining :-)

Like I've said, all people have likes and dislikes, but you can still recognize talent, have an appreciation for an artist musicality. Sometimes it takes a practitioner to see that.

Some can do this naturally, but most can't, so that understanding and training in music gives a richer appreciation.
