[Perform-Talk] Flashback Friday: Talent Show

Hi. I've read all the messages in this topic but didn't have time to
respond until now...

I've seen and performed in multiple talent shows at the conventions...
I like the idea of live accompaniment as opposed to canned backing
tracks, however, there are issues that should be addressed:

1. When I played in the one at the convention in Detroit for example,
the sound tech, if you want to call him that, supposedly had no way to
run a standard quarter inch jack from my guitar into the mixing board.
If something this simple is an issue on a regular basis at these sort
of things, then maybe multiple instruments in a live setting is
something that may not be realistic unless a team is put together and
rehearses beforehand, sound personnel included. (I went to school for
audio production and have ran live sound off and on for well over a
decade so I think this guy was just being lazy but anyways...)

2. Maybe there should be a way for people who are interested in the
talent show to get in touch with each other to pass around music,
lyrics, talk about what they'd like to perform etc. I was an
accompanist a couple of times but that only came about because I
happened to know the singers beforehand and we had some time to plan
and rehearse. Not everybody has those sort of contacts or knows how to
make them...

3. And this sort of relates to my 2nd point... there are people with
different levels of ability and experience who sign up for these sort
of things, for better or for worse... If somebody did need a backing
track for example, it would be good if there were a way for them to
find someone so a backing track could be ready before the convention
rolls around.

Perhaps this has already been taken care of and I am not aware of it,
however, if not, then maybe something could be put out there so that
general convention attendees would see it... Maybe another e mail
group? I don't know. Yes there is this list and there is the nfb music
talk list, however, maybe a specific thing for talent show related
"stuff" would be a good idea as long as the word actually got out so
everyone knows that it existed at least.

By the way, if I had been able to make it this year, I would have
gladly thrown my hat into the ring to play guitar for the purple rain
performance!
