[Perform-Talk] Flashback Friday: Talent Show

Hello:

I became a new member at the convention last year. I have been singing for
over 50 years. Gosh, that really makes me feel old. Anyway, I had
considered performing last year but did not have any accompaniment.
although I can sing without it, I prefer to have at least piano
accompaniment. It would take a lot of organization ahead of time but, I
think it would work if people could be in touch with their selections in
plenty of time so an accompanist can be found. If an instrumental group is
formed for the purpuseds of accompanying singers, then times would have to
be found during the week before the talent show so everyone can practice
together. I will not be attending this year due to financial difficulties.
I do hope everyone has a great time and a wonderful talent show. I will
look forward to hearing the recording whether it is live streamed or
available for later listening.

You can allow for both live and recorded accompaniment, if you can find the
volunteers willing to provide live accompaniment. Perhaps performers would
have to notify PAD in advance if they wished to use the live accompaniment
so an idea of what to expect would be known, but the biggest obstacle I see
to this is finding the volunteers. It's all contingent upon finding people
who will agree to show up with instruments and provide accompaniment. But
this way, performers have a choice. It does seem doable though.

That's what I get for opening my big giant mouth. I've paid to do a lot of
things in life, but I've never paid to be in address.
But, as leaders we serve at the pleasure of the people. But as you also
know, I'm willing to do practically anything in support of the Federation.
As it relates to the topic of accompaniment, I too would like to hear
others' thoughts, as this conversation was broached a number of years ago
during a general membership conference call, and as it relates to the talent
show the views were mixed, but very much one-sided as it related to the
sound and sight projects.
As a matter of personal perspective, I love live music, but as was also
articulately stated by our current president, it's very important to have a
variety of performance types, as well as not being biased while also
creating a lineup that will be both thoughtful and entertaining at the same
time. You definitely don't want 30 of the same types of performances,
particularly in that type of performance arena. Another saying that we used
to struggle as a division with was keeping people in their seats for the
show and it's entirety, I believe now we've tackle that with the most
recently board approved performance allowance for both performers, and
overall showtime. I cite this as a recent decision, as it has only been
since 2013 it functioned in this manner.

As many of you may remember, the talent show in years past would go until
well after midnight. And that wasn't feasible for individual performers, nor
was it feasible for those of us who were facilitating the event. Again, this
is yet another hurdle that has also been tackled.
But seriously, I think this could be an interesting idea for years to come.
I've seen this work at a number of state conventions of the last two years,
most recently at the Louisiana convention.
That particular instance involved Tennessee affiliate president, lead singer
of the cane tips, the infamous, and ever wild Mr. James Brown and it was
absolutely awesome! In any event, I'd love to hear more thoughts and ideas.
