My name is Katie Noyes. I am working with Danielle Pretsfelder Demchick, CSA
& Elizabeth Hay (DPD Casting) on the Deaf led feature film (written/directed
by Jevon Whetter and produced by his brother, Delbert Whetter) FLASH BEFORE
THE BANG (link to deadline article embedded), based on a true story of a
history-making high school track team.  
 
As one of the few casting professionals in this industry that identifies as
Hard of Hearing (HoH), I could not be more excited to be working on a
project that will make a significant impact for d/Deaf & HoH representation
because of this team's dedication to authentic casting.
 
It's a big project with a big Deaf-led team that also includes Matt Damon
and Ben Affleck among its producers and Jessica Alba, Russell Harvard, and
Daniel Durant attached in lead roles.
 
In an effort to fulfill our authentic casting mission, I am reaching out to
Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths and Adults-Rocky Mountain
today because we are conducting a nationwide search, seeking performers of
all skill levels with high-intermediate to high ASL fluency levels.

Please note-currently, casting is for the DEAF TRACK TEAM (Male) roles at

Seeking performers that fit the following character descriptions:
 
1. (7) DEAF TRACK TEAM MEMBERS (INCLUDING LEAD ROLE) -Seeking Deaf or Hard
of Hearing performers, especially those who have been Deaf since birth or
early childhood.
Athletic experience is a plus.
 
2. DEAFBLIND HIGH SCHOOL SPRINTER
-A High school athlete with Usher's Syndrome. He is Deaf and legally blind.
Seeking Deaf and blind/low vision performers and DeafBlind performers for
this role.
Athletic experience is a plus.
 
SEEKING ACTORS OF ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS.

Seems like they're missing "person" at the end of that subject line.
Or "Actor", "Actress", "Performer", or anything else that lends
humanity to what should be an adjective describing a characteristic.
Not sure what others will have to say on this, but I hate being
referred to as "a blind" or something that attempts to make my
disabilities into nouns.

Does anyone know how to fix the problem in PayPal where it is stuck on goods and services for the performing arts division? I?m trying to pay my dues for this year and I can?t get it on friends and family so they don?t have to pay that fee whatever that is. Thank you so much.

I am not an expert, but since we are a nonprofit organization we have to pay the Paypal fees. We are in Paypal as a nonprofit, which is similar to being a business, which is how it needs to be done for tax reasons. If you want to offset the cost of the fees, you could pay a little more for your dues. But, unfortunately, the fees need to be paid to and collected by Paypal.

Hello Annie,
Do you have an affiliate partnership with this person? Just curious,
these free classes, there's a paid product/service invitation at the
end? That's generally how these things work because The Global Actor
is a company name.

I narrate audiobooks myself. It's one possible income stream in a
voiceover context and the least paid, in comparison to commercials,
for instance. I prefer them for financing other, less profitable but
more enjoyable projects like audiobooks. Cartoons/animations pay
better than audiobooks but can be as labour intensive.

Just my twopence worth, hee hee! Enjoy the classes, if you guys decide
to attend. Just be aware that free isn't necessarily free, buying
courses afterwards etc.

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for pointing this out-I do not work for the Global Actor per se, but I do course work through them.  I apologize sincerely for not putting in a disclaimer of sorts.
How well I know the catch to many of these free masterclasses.  Now, having said that, if any of you do decide to take the masterclass and buy the course, it is a worthy investment if narration is what you are passionate about.

I would add materials transcribed in  brailleMusic on the list. You will need it for music theory and aural skills  especially.   I know I've had students who have been able to work with their disability services department and have them braille the music using the Dancing Dots software. I did this myself when I was gettingmusic therapy training and in graduate school. I had a Reader who I worked with. I have one student who uses a Bluetooth keyboard, it's a small electric keyboard, that you can just hook up to your computer or laptop and he uses that in class for assignments. Using your braille note will help especially with dictation.

Yes, if the school itself is able to transcribe music / theory textbooks for you it will save you lots of time and frustration. When I went to IU for undergrad the school purchased Dancing Dots software, which was very useful both for me to use in theory classes and for the DMA student they hired to create Braille scores for me. He took a few weeks to learn how to do it, but his work was absolutely fantastic and he could get things ready for me very, very quickly.

Another thing to consider is whether you need help with reserving practice space. Each school is different and many of them use systems such as Asimut for people to book practice time. However that wasn't the case when I was at Juilliard and most of the time people ended up walking around looking through practice room windows, which isn't possible as a blind person. In that situation it was important for me to find a solution, rather than spending hours every week knocking on doors to see if rooms were empty or constantly asking others for help.

Hi Julia,
You?ve gotten some great suggestions to think about here. Here are a few things I would add to give you some potential ideas.
First, if you ever find yourself thinking you may need a reader, I would list it as an accommodation. Some schools are reluctant to hire one for you, because it can be expensive, but I found it was always helpful just in case, as you can?t always get those accessible documents in time.
Secondly, consider anything you may need for a music theory/sight singing class. Braille  music is probably already going to help you a lot, but I did find it helpful at the beginning to have the TA or someone like an aid to sit next to me and explain anything that the teacher was putting up on the board, in case I needed clarification. Might be worth requesting a potential assistant for those type of classes, even if you end up not needing it. Of course, that is a personal decision and you will figure out what works best for you.
My last main thought for now is about ensembles. Do you need any extra accommodations for orchestra? If they require sightsinging in auditions, do you need to get that music ahead of time?
I do also echo the part about practice room space, as that can get complicated. It?s not the end of the world to walk by listening and knock on a few doors, but if you?re able to have a designated hour or two each day, in a specific room, that you know you can always use, that can be really helpful.

When I went to Eastman, it was nearly impossible to find a practice room so what they did for me is, they gave me my own practice room. That way, I also had a space where my reader could record stuff for me. Now at the other two schools, there was no need for me to have my own practice room because I could easily find one on my own. If the door was open, the room was available.

I don't know?the only details we have about this performance are those provided in the email we forwarded and in the convention agenda. I would suggest contacting the Texas affiliate directly.

It's time once again for all NFB members and friends interested in
empowering blind people through the performing arts to join the National
Federation of the Blind Performing Arts Division for our exciting array of
activities at the NFB national convention! Come hear from a variety of
speakers at our division meeting, including a professional storyteller, and
express yourself creatively and freely in our improv workshop. Then, join us
in celebrating the diverse talents of our community at our 21st annual
Showcase of Talent! We are excited to offer a virtual platform to listen in
to both our business meeting and the Showcase of Talent for those who are
unable to join us in Houston. Here are all the details:

hello all,

first of all thanks chris for posting these links for zoom. i'am
already here in houston and, i will be at the meeting in person:)

i'am glad that you got the information that i sent via email in having
the agenda put out before i left today. i'am glad this will be done
soon before the meeting on july 3rd.

thanks again all for all of your hard work on this division and, i
look forward to seeing as much of you all in person soon here in
thouston, texas for convention!
