Good afternoon.
I just wanted to let you all know that I found another community theater in
my area. It is called Summer Stage Wooster, and as the name suggests, they
only do shows during the summer. This works well for me, considering that I
have just been accepted to Malone University, the college I've been wanting
to go to ever since I graduated from Stark State for the first time. Summer
Stage Wooster has been in business since 2012, and they include everybody
in their shows and do not pre-cast or cast their friends or anything like
that. I reached out to them last week, expressing interest in joining. I
did not tell them I was blind, at least not yet or until I show up for an
audition. I got a pretty fast response. I have figured out already how I'm
going to let them know what I need. They require you to cold-read from the
script, do a choreographed group dance, and sing a few measures of a song.
For the cold-reading part of the audition, I will email them a few weeks
before the audition to ask them to send me a Word document of the script;
that is also when I'll tell them that I am blind. For the choreographed
group dance, I will ask them to run through it a few times because it's
completely unrealistic to expect me to memorize a dance after only having
it shown to me once. I will not bring my cane onstage during the play or
rehearsals. I don't want to be thought of as totally independent, or
thought of as helpless. I can't put my own stage makeup on and I will need
help with my costume.
I am excited to join Summer Stage Wooster.
