Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an experience I had at the Audio Publishers’ Assocation conference: It was not a “bad” experience by any stretch, but I’m curious if any of you have done something similar.

One of the workshops I attended was “Narrator Roulette” which involved reading a surprise script and reading it in the voice of different characters: E.g. A wicked witch, 96-year-old New Yorker, Pirate princess, ETC. I was all in! (If you know me well, then you know😊. Normally, I would reach out to the facilitators ahead of time to ask for accommodations, particularly if it’s someone I’ve never worked before, but this time I didn’t and here’s why:

The fun of the game was the element of surprise, so in the spirit of stepping outside one’s comfort zone, my thought was to put it on them! If I were to have been called on, I would make up my own story or use a script I have (unbeknownst to the leaders) based on a given prompt. After all, to ask for the scripts in advance would defeat the whole purpose, right?

Fortunately or unfortunately, I did not get called on. I do, however, intend to reach out to the facilitators and offer feedback on how they can make it work.

Some thoughts I had: If this is done in person next year, ask for *possible* scripts they might use with the understanding that I would download them, but not read through ahead of time.

Use a script from a book I’ve read, but not narrated.

Suggest they make it more of a “Round Robin” storytelling experience, or answer a question like:

“You know what really makes me mad?” ETC.

How would you/have you handled a similar experience?

(Also, if anyone can tell me how I might quickly grab a link that someone posts in a zoom chat, that would be helpful. Simply pressing enter doesn’t seem to do the trick).

I appreciate your thoughts in advance😊.

Annie
