The College of Education and Rehabilitation and Salus University
(formerly Pennsylvania College of Optometry) is pleased to offer
several online courses of interest to individuals working in the field
of visual impairment who are seeking professional development
opportunities and graduate credit:
715 Braille Literacy: Assessment & Instruction (2 semester credits)
Learners are taught how to teach reading and writing with Braille as
the literacy medium to children and adults, including those with
additional disabilities. The course covers how to assess reading and
writing, programs designed specifically for teaching Braille reading
and writing, and how to determine what approach to use with specific
students. This online course consists of eight modules, varying from
one to three weeks each. In addition to exploring topics related to
assessment and instruction of braille literacy, the course is infused
with activities and assessments designed to maintain and add to
learners' literary braille skills. Proficiency in literary braille is

716 Introduction to Assistive Technology (2 semester credits)
Introduction to a wide variety of technology that assists people with
visual impairments to access information, with emphasis given to
computer technology. The course provides hands-on experience with a
screen reader and with a screen magnification program. Issues related
to legislation, financing, use or abandonment of technology by the
consumer, assessment and instructional strategies for teaching
technology are discussed. Instructor: Ms. Barbara Maurer

781 O&M Seminar: Responding to Contemporary Issues in O&M (1 semester
credit)
This course provides a forum for learners to explore contemporary
issues/challenges pertinent to the field of orientation and mobility,
such as teaching O&M to students with multiple disabilities, writing
appropriate records and reports, engaging students in their learning
experience, and collaborating effectively with students, families,
professionals and paraeducators. This one credit course is conducted
online for 5 weeks. Instructor: Dr. Fabiana Perla fperla at salus.edu
The spring semester runs from January 12th through May 16th. Tuition
is $624 per semester hour. The registration deadline is December 14th
(late registration deadline December 19th).
