Hi everyone,

This is Debbie Hartz and I teach High School English at the Arizona School for the Blind (part of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind in Tucson, Arizona). Our school is looking for someone who is "highly qualified" to teach High School English and, in particular, to teach Writing. We are looking for someone who is a Certified Secondary English Teacher or someone who is Certified as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired who has 24 credits or more of English on his or her college transcripts so that the Arizona State Government will recognize him or her as "highly qualified" to teach writing and perhaps some literature classes.

We have had two high school English teachers for several years now and we are having a greater number of our students who are passing the AIMS test in Reading and Writing. AIMS is Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards, the state test for high school graduation. The test is given during the second half of a student's sophomore year and then twice a year until the student passes the tests. Our freshmen and sophomores have two English classes per year and juniors and seniors who have not yet passed the Reading and Writing portions of the AIMS test often continue to have two English classes per year. Juniors and Seniors who have passed the AIMS test in Reading and Writing either take a single English class at ASDB or they take an English class from Pima Community College.

At the beginning of this school year the other HS English teacher took the job as our team leader (supervisor). What this means is that literacy and Braille are very much supported at our school. We are working to increase Writing across the Curriculum this year and SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) is happening in the high school in all classes on Blue Days during second period.

BUT we need a great writing teacher who the state will consider "highly qualified!" If you are a TVI with 24 credits of English OR a Certified Secondary English Teacher, please consider our school. It is a fun place to work and some good things are happening here. I have included the link for applying for this job. I think that although I went directly to the listing and copied the URL, this link may only take you to the Arizona State Jobs home page. If that happens, type "teacher school for the blind" in the Search box and then look for the listing for a Language Arts teacher in the high school. This listing is for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to teach Language Arts at the high school level. If you are a Certified Secondary English Teacher and are not certified as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, our principal, Samuel Ace, has stated that we could pair a good writing teacher up with a TVI initially. Please contact us and talk to us. Debbie Hartz (520) 770-3437 or Samuel Ace (520) 770-3202.
