One of the fastest ways to get a child  reading braille is put her on a Braille Note. With the voice reading everything she is brailling, then she reading from the display gives a great cause and effect. I have even had middle and high school kids pick up the code incredibly fast because of this method.

In addition, I use the exact same curriculum as what she is learning in class, then you have a ton of reinforcement for her to do the work, because it is what everyone else is doing. Yes, it is trascribed all into contracted braille. Time with me or you as the case may be, is spent going over the contractions. Books can be put on the Braille Note so she can follow along with the class. Then when she is in class, she begins to be able to read the conractions, but also can follow along with her peers. When the kids read by themselves and she cannot read as fast, as it will take her time to gain speed, she can have the Braille Note read to her.

That is just a quick response. Lot's of other detail goes along with that. :)
