hi,

Thanks for your perspective.
I wasn't told of this path about ten years ago and only specialize in
adaptive technology.
What is your opinion of non tvi people being involved in some manner perhaps
as providing additional training?

Hi,
I apologize for contradicting Sara' response stating that the TVI "teaches
blind and visually impaired students without additional disabilities."
Perhaps the responsibility of a TVI is different in some states but in most
states we serve students with a variety of disabilities but the student must
have a visual impairment of some degree to be eligible to receive TVI
services. I have had students who are totally blind or low vision with no
other disability but at this point in my almost 30 years of teaching the
majority of my VI students also have other disabilities. I have
increasingly more students with cortical visual impairment with multiple
disabilities; along with students who are hearing impaired or Deaf; learning
disabilities; developmentally delayed; physical involvement; communication
issues; medically fragile students that are home based, etc., etc.,
etc....It would be very difficult to classify my typical caseload from one
year to the next. And as a TVI I work closely with other specialists to
meet the diverse needs of my students, ie. PT, OT, Speech, Augmentative
Communication, Assistive Technology.
Shelley
